UP 844/3985 Keddie Wye, Eastbound 1991 With Rude Ending
Author: RailRat

This is footage was shot by my Rail Fan Friend Rick Reed in 1991, We traded VHS video footage back then, just like most fans traded pictures or slide photographs, so this is a second generation copy of VHS tape from Rick. He Captured the most important and thrilling part of 844 and 3985 exiting the tunnell and whistling off as they crossed the Keddie Wye Bridge, but near the end another fan got in the way of Ricks camera. I think that at the moment, Rick thought that his video of a lifetime was forever ruined by the intruder, untill later when he reviewed the footage, discovered that the most important part of his efforts were not lost forever. (I'm pretty sure that Rick used to set up his camera to film, then he would walk away from it to enjoy the whole scene for the moment, then he would come back to turn it off afterwards).

I agree, or being asked to move when you're all set up already when the train's close!

Thanks for the video Jim. Steve and Lynn were on the 844 and Rick Steele and I were on the 3985.

That's for sure. I've had the same thing happen to me. After the train passed, I had some colorful advice for the idiot. His ears must have burned for the rest of the day.

If the videographer walked away the offender may not have known the camera was running. I try to be aware of my surroundings when around other rail fans and not block a shot ... but I also protect my shots by staying near the camera (usually shooting stills while the video runs).  A 1985 era camera should not have been easy to miss ... but it is a lot easier to see a person.

Yes agree with everything you stated here, plus I think Rick would step away to shoot stills, while his video cam was recording at the same time.

I always stayed with my video cam at all times, always checking my shot in the viewfinder, and especially because a decent gust of wind could easily knock over those big cameras of that era, even on a decent tripod.

I will never forget that trip. I was using a rented video camera and started following the special at James. It was the most rude group of railfans that I have ever encountered.  Specifically, there was a group of German railfans driving a rented car. West of the Pulga trestle they nearly caused several traffic accidents. By the time we got to the Williams Loop, thoughts were turning homicidal among more than a few. At Spring Garden, they were in the lead and foolishly drove all the way in and parked close to the tracks. Several of us then parked around and in front of their car. When the special passed by, they rushed back to their car....and went nowhere. First in, last out. This put them way behind in the chase to Portola. Maybe they learned something. Probably not.

Myself and the crew of Imperial Irrigation district 151 (0-6-0 with Central Pacific slope back tender) were guests of TO member Copy19 for lunch and ride from Sacramento to Portola on the rear car. Since the loco had 2 whistle ports, we got with John and he would bring out whistles from the UP display car for us to blow. So, every whistle in the car once again had steam through it,  which was quite entertaining. TO member eng3420 had a good time blowing those big whistles on a small engine. John graciously offered us lunch and a ride and we didn't think twice about it and weren't worrying about how to get back. What a ride John, thanks.

Videographers can kind of be annoying when they set up in such a way that they block angles for going away or secondary shots or make it so you can't get as close as you'd like. I don't if that's happened here but this video brings that to mind. This seems like a pretty difficult place to avoid stepping on people's toes when you see all the tree branches. Great video!
