Steam & Excursion > Wales SteamDate: 03/03/19 03:13 Wales Steam Author: andersonb109 Only three more countries to go! At the risk of starting another debate as to weather England, Scotland and Wales are separate countries, for purposes here, they are so here goes. Wales is known for it's "Great Little Trains of Wales." The two most well known are the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways. Both are under common ownership. Tracks are 597mm originally built for slate traffic. Here we see o-4-0STT No. 4 Palmerston built in 1864 at Dduallt Loop on the Ffestiniog on a October, 2011 David Williams charter. At this point the line crosses over itself to gain elevation. This was necessary when in 1971 the original right of way was blocked by a new reservoir for a hydroelectric power station. Total length of the line is just over 13 miles. Anyone who likes narrow gauge railways, Wales is a must. There are several other heritage lines all withing short proxamity of eadch other. And all use protypical beautifully restored vintage equipment. Porthmadog, home of the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog can be reached by a rather long train journey from London Euston with one change at Birmingham

Bob Date: 03/03/19 10:44 Re: Wales Steam Author: meixel My wife and I rode both for the first time last September and enjoyed them a lot. We want to go back and ride them when the weather is better. The side benefit is that we stayed at the Hotel Portmerion which is less than two miles from Porthmadog. This hotel is also known as "The Village" for all of you "The Prisoner" fans which is my favoritie, all time TV series.

Date: 03/03/19 13:54 Re: Wales Steam Author: andersonb109 Good luck with the weather! Wales weather can be very difficult to predict. All of our charters out of necessity (to have full line occupation) have been done early November. On the day of the photograph I choose, it had rained much of the day. We were lucky at that location.

It makes me even more excited about going there and riding both railroads in early May.

I walked from Porthmadog station to the Festiniog shops, After touring the shops, I walked the rest of the way to Portmerion. I still haven't figured out which stop was the bigger "Fantasy Land"! Date: 03/04/19 08:20 Re: Wales Steam Author: meixel They are both magical places. I just feel very lucky that they are so close to each other. Unfortunately I have not been able to take the shop tour and hope to next time.
John Meixel Longmont, CO Date: 03/04/19 10:45 Re: Wales Steam Author: hogheaded A nice alternative to that 10+ hour train ride from London is to take a train to Llandudno instead (3.5+ hours), stay the night (but don't eat at the Mexican resteraunt), then in the morning, take the branch line train southward to Blaenau Festinog (less than 2 hours) where it connects with the Ffestinog Ry. for the trip to Porthmadog. Or, spend the night in Llandudno and take the coastal route to Porthmadog the next day. Llandudno is a very nice little seaside town that caters to tourists, and the whole of Wales is too beautiful to fully appreciate if you are exhausted by your travels.
EO Date: 03/04/19 12:45 Re: Wales Steam Author: xrds72 Here we are taking on water at Tanybwlch (yes that is spelled correctly) on the Ffestiniog Rwy. The engine in the Fairlie's Patent built in 1992 (yes that is the correct year)
