In with the photos the late Key Route Ken sent me were these three 8X10s.

1. Pickering Lumber Corp. Two Truck Shay 3 at Standard, CA on April 22, 1950.

2. Pickering Lumber Corp. Three Truck Shay 8 at Beardsley Flat, CA on July 25, 1958.

3. Pickering Lumber Corp. Three Truck Shay 11 and logs and caboose at Beardsley, CA in October 17, 1958.  Aaron Zorko made a wonderful audio recording of #11 and posted it at https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,3969012,3971880#msg-3971880

I was privileged to acquire from Stan Kistler a number of his original negatives of various loggers that he photographed..  I have the original negatives for these 3 images.

Fantastic photos!  In photo #1, I count eight steam locomotives in front of the Standard shop, and I'll bet that all eight of them still exist!  Photo #3 in on the famous "Peeled Onion", just west of Beardsley Dam.  I believe that eleven loaded cars were the maximum for a single Shay on the steep grade (4%?) from Beardsley to Schottgen Pass.  Often the trains were longer and required a helper between the last car and the caboose. 

A remarkable number of Pickering locomotives still exist...

She is wearing a historically accurate paint scheme for Pickering Lumber.

Pickering had trackage rights over the Sierra RR between Ralph and the mill at Standard. At some point, there was litigation involving a "black steam locomotive" on Sierra's rails over this shared trackage. To defend against future claims, Pickering elected to apply Crimson Red paint on their locomotives.

Thanks for posting the photos. I used to work summers in Twain Harte when the Pickering still used steam as well as their diesels. The #11 and the #33 would both roll through Twain Harte and the sound of their whistle would echo off the surrounding hills and drown out the sounds of the skeleton log cars rattling.
