Steam & Excursion > When Steam Locomotives Needed Rescuing, More Steam Was Called In!Date: 03/10/19 03:11 When Steam Locomotives Needed Rescuing, More Steam Was Called In! Author: LoggerHogger Steam power was put to more than one use by this country's railroads over the decades that steam motive power ruled the rails. That same power source was called in whenever things went wrong and steam locomotives found themselves in predicaments such as we see here.
In these scenes we see what power would be called in to help when Santa Fe steam power found itself on the ground after a derailment. AT&SF #3864 appears to have split a switch when has left her in this predicament. Santa Fe was quick to dispatach steam crane # 199783 to the desert scene to put things in order. The power of this steam crane was more than enough to hoist #3864 back on the rails so she could continue on her way. However, before the crane could depart, there were a number of freight cars on #3864's train that would also need rescuing on this day. If you notice, when #3864 hit the ground she took out the water standpipe that had stood by the tracks. Martin Edited 8 time(s). Last edit at 03/10/19 03:29 by LoggerHogger. Why would the smokebox door have been removed ? Date: 03/10/19 05:58 Re: When Steam Locomotives Needed Rescuing, More Steam Was Called Author: HotWater NKP715 Wrote:

The smokebox door isn't "removed", it is simply swung open in order to swing the headlight assembly out of harms way. The lifting cable would have gotten it. Poor standpipe. It's where I learned how the railroad culture that governed how the wreck clearing was organized/commanded. There was a Wreckmaster in total charge and the ONLY person on site that gave orders/instructions. At one wreck the President of the road showed up and sure enough he stood by silently and witnessed the progress.
Now it's all contracted out and the big hooks are museum pieces. Ross Rowland Date: 03/10/19 09:14 Re: When Steam Locomotives Needed Rescuing, More Steam Was Called Author: LoggerHogger crackerjackhoghead Wrote:

Second paragraph of the original post says they split a switch. The date is October 23, 1947, the train is identified as a GFX (green fruit express) with two 3800-class 2-10-2's on each end, and the location is indeed Keenbrook. The photo in the book is credited to T.M. Trolinger, collection of Stan Kistler.

Date: 03/11/19 01:34 Re: When Steam Locomotives Needed Rescuing, More Steam Was Called Author: Evan_Werkema By the way, derrick 199783 was stationed at San Bernardino, so it wasn't far from the scene of the mishap. It was a 1922 product of Industrial Works with a 120 ton capacity. It was never dieselized, and was retired by the mid-1960's.

I think she was on the ground before getting to the points, which don't seem to have any damage. I'm thinking the pilot whees were derailed before getting to the frog, were diverted by the curved closure rail and pulled the front of the engine to the right off the tracks. The tender appears to have remained on thr track.
What do ya think? -LD Date: 03/11/19 22:11 Re: When Steam Locomotives Needed Rescuing, More Steam Was Called Author: mundo That MAY be the one at OERM Perris, stripped for diesel, never done.
