UP just sent out an email of the schedules for 844 and 4014 to Utah and return.https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm

844 departs Cheyenne April 27, 4014 departs Cheyenne May 4. With the objective being to have as many people seeing these movements as possible, I'm rather surprised by the fact they're taking track 3, but I get it, traffic comes first.

Wonder which locomotive will have the complete steam crew support consist? Since they have only one "crew car", i.e. the Art Lockman, and only one "boiler dorm", i.e. the Howard Fogg, will the complete set accompany 844 west, then deadhead the support equipment back to Cheyenne, in order to accompany 4014?

How is two locomotives coming back? 4014 towing 844? After all, only ONE engineer( and we know who) can operate steam locomotives. Nobody else is as good as him.

As mentioned in schedule the locomotives will be doubleheading. My guess is Ted will be the engineer in one of the locomotives for the doubleheader.

I’m much more interested in the movement going out. Why two separate moves? As pointed out in this thread, what about the necessary support cars that there is only one of? I’m also curious about crews as well but with the separate movements it seems that the crew will simply leave No. 844 in Ogden while they bring out No. 4014.

Just for kicks, I wonder if anybody on the crew knows how to fire an oil burning 4000 class locomotive? The 3985 was not easy, and 4014 should be a LOT different.

When I was on the crew I was told that the locomotive with the higher diameter drivers usually led. I believe that has to do to the adhesion factors.
Although back in the day I recall seeing helpers in front for ease of uncoupling purposes.

Where exactly do you see that they are taking track 3 over Sherman Hill?  I was unable to find anything in the official release noting them using the cutoff.

I'll bet I could. Knowing what I've learned on 3985 over the various improvements with her air intake modifications, it shouldn't really be all that difficult.

Interesting question. . . . 

I'm pretty sure there are still some 4000 class engineers and firemen still alive. However, since there was a grand total of -- one -- oil burning steamer in that class, and that operated in what -- 1947 or so, surviving firemen with that particular experience might be hard to find. 

Somehow, though, I suspect if the UP Steam Crew is clever enough to rebuild the 844 and 4014 from the rails up, they might be able to figure out how to fire an oil-burning Big Boy. . . .

It’s a lot different.... but shouldn’t be that difficult?

Sounds like the steam crew shouldn’t have much of a problem.
