A SP 4-6-0 in the Mole Shot by Richard Steinheimer
Author: MartyBernard

Found this of SP 183 in with the photographs the late Key Route Ken sent me.

And the photographer wrote this on the back of the 8X10, " Return to Richard Steinheimer    Oakland Pier   c. 1949-50"   Thought you'd like to see that too.  Scroll down!

[EDIT]  Note, the tender reads NWP (Northwestern Pacific Railroad), not SP.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

That's an NWP 4-6-0!  A rarity at the Mole I would guess.

It was the numbers on the cab that were rthe initial giveaway - not SP number style!

How old was Steinheimer in 1949 and where was he living? I think he was a photog for the San Rafael Independent by 1958 or so and pretty young mid twenties I would guess by the pics I've seen.

Love that picture.  It's in Harre Demoro's  "Southern Pacific Bay Area Steam" book.  I wore that book out back when it was one of the few books covering SP steam.
It is sad that one of the NWP 180 class wasn't saved.  They were good looking loco's.

My favorite Stein photo is of an SP 4-6-2  rear lit  and taken from the tender end on that same outside track along the edge of the mole.  Been published many places and it's a killer.
