Steam & Excursion > SP 18 at Rockwood, Colorado February 16Date: 03/19/19 19:28 SP 18 at Rockwood, Colorado February 16 Author: randyr SP 18 is visiting the Durango and Silverton for a few months. Last month it participated in a couple Photo Trains. On Saturday February 16, the locomotive was to pull a train to the Cascade Canyon Wye, about 26 miles north of Durango. But an avalanche just south of the Wye caused a change in plans. The train of two coaches and a caboose ran as for north as possible, then backed down to the Rockwood Wye, about 8 miles to turn the train and return to Durango.
1) SP 18 coming around the Rockwood Wye, they left the caboose on the mainline when they turned the train. 2) Backing down to load the passengers at the Rockwood Station. 3) I snapped this pic just before getting back on the train. Notice how quickly the weather changed. There was some discussion of backing the train back out on to the "High Line" for a photo runby, but with the weather changing, it was decided to return to Durango. I am still amazed I was able to see this engine in operation, thanks to all the volunteers who restored it and to the D&SNGRR for allowing a few trips with it out on the line. I realize it is operating far from home and the consist is not authentic, but it sure was an experience to see it in operation. Plus, except for the caboose, it was a matching consist. Thanks for looking. On another site I read the railroad is offering a roundtrip to Silverton with the 18 in May. So there is a chance to see it again along the line.
