Quite a display of of power from our beloved lady!..... I Think It Was Our Friend Bob Krieger who told me there was going to be a photo runby way out here abot 40 miles west of Winnemucca,Nevada this day, so I scrambled out along the dusty and washbard roads to get out here, not to be dissapointed, by a display of of raw power of a steam engine, beyond my wildest dreams, ever imaginable.

Fantastic video, makes me think of the “more power” line from Tim Allen’s old show.  Thank you for posting.  The one time I went to chase 3985 was her trip up the Feather River Canyon during Railfair ‘99.  Have seen and chased 844 multiple times now, but 3985 is the one that got away.

So did you need a new car after that drive?  My dad’s truck was never the same after the road to Bodie, CA.  The doors needed a little extra push to shut right.

The "helm"?????     Either Steve Lee, or Bob Krieger, would have been the Engineer, and no steering would have been required.

Thanks for all the nice comments, I was in a white raised standard pickup with about a 100 gallon spray rig on back for pest control, no damage, but lots of fine Nvada dust!, really had to protect that VHS cam from it!

I was too when 3985 approached and stopped, then I quickly scrambled down to this location for the big show.

I am long enough in the tooth to have seen a Challenger-class pulling the inbound City of Denver back in the early 1950's as it overtook our 65 mph car speed on U.S 85 between La Salle and Platteville.  The sound of its whistle, much like the scream of a banshee (not that I knew or still know what that would be like:-), gave me goose bumps as it flew by like we were stopped.  Thanks for bringing back a "live one."

Merriam Webster second definition of helm----a position of leadershup  , head.   a new dean is at the helm of the medical school  (I dont think medical schools have a wheel  being referenced here)

second definitions are   another way to define a word, perehaps not used as frequently as the first,  but nevertheless not incorrect

Thanks Doug, you have to know that Hot Water is a tried and true Hard Boiled railroader, and don't take offense to his replies, we all know what you meant, yes Steve Lee was in charge of everything the Challenger did back then, whether he was at the seat of the engine or not.
