Sometimes When Recording Steam On Film You Got Two For One!
Author: LoggerHogger

In these modern days, with active steam locomotives being harder and harder to find, we are lucky to be able to catch one active steam locomotive in our viewfinder at any one time.  Such was not always the case as we see in these images.

Back in April, 1935 Al Farrow was recording the steam motive power in service on the Mud Bay Lumber Company near Olympia, Washington when he caught this portrait of their 2-truck Heisler #6 waiting parked near the water tank.  Al was able to frame his shot so that he also caught Mud Bay's 2-8-2 #4 working the log dump in the background that afternoon.

Another such lucky catch was achieved by Paul Hosmer of the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Co. when he was photographing a Brooks_Scanlon 2-8-2 and her crew laying track down at the mill yard in Bend, Oregon one day in the 1940's.  In the background he was able to catch one of Shevlin-Hixon's Baldwin 2-8-2's working that company's log dump across the Deschutes River from where Hosmer was filming.

Needless to say, the ultimate 2-in-1 shot goes to Bert Ward for his wonderful catch of Ed Hines Lumber 2-6-2 #2 at the log dump at Westfir, Oregon with an SP Cab-Forward passing overhead on it's way to Oakridge.

Lucky catches, or not, it was certainly easier to fill your veiwfinder with active steam power back in that era than it is today.

"Than it is today."  Unless you are participating in one of Martin's photographers specials.

Exactly.  That was a real surprise, after advertising TWO steam locomotives in operation at MRSR, only to discover FOUR.  Thanks for all of those events, Martin.  I have enjoyed every one that I could attend, and have enjoyed the company of many of the "regular" participants.s . Then at Sumpter:
