This Locomotive Is Positioned Where She Can Do The Most Good!
Author: LoggerHogger

Built as the first of the Great Northern's O-1 Class of 2-8-2's SP&S #500 looks right at home on helper duty in September, 1947 on a westbound fright at Wishram, Washington.

Originally built as GN's #3026 in January 1913, she was purchased by the SP&S in March, 1924 for the sum of $32,743.94.  During 1942 she was modified by the SP&S by having her cab moved farther back on her frame as we see here.  This allowed for extra room for an additional crew member in the cab during operations.  She also received a larger 10,000 gallon tender to replace the 8,000 gallon one that she sported on the GN.

#500 cuts a fine pose in this portrait of her in action.  What a shame she would be scrapped less than 2 years later in June, 1949.

The NYC "Auto Body Car" is a nice detail.

Don't think I've seen that notation before. It's a 50 foot boxcar, Lot 742-B. Probably double doors?

Why is she all dressed up, with flags?

I noticed the Belpaire firebox, something usually associated with the Pennsylvania RR.  Was there an ex-Pennsy man in charge of motive power at GN?

Seems the locomotive's origial owners, the Great Northern
as states, were fans of Belpaire fireboxes and were "the
other" well known users of such locomotives.

Here's an interesting link on Belpaire fireboxes from
"American-Rails.com" - a great site worth a bookmark.

Cool pic, Martin - thanks, as always for the share!
