C&O 2716 to move July 26-28
Author: Defective_Detector

The Kentucky Steam Heritage group announced today that 2716 will be moved from its current location in New Haven, Ky to Ravenna. The trip will take the locomotive over CSX, RJ Corman and Kentucky Railway Museum tracks. The locomotive will be displayed at several locations along the route, including Lexington, KY.

There will also be a public excursion on KRM tracks to ride along on this historic event.

I read the release and am not clear how the excursion(s) fit in.

Will it be a ride on the normal excursion route in New Haven, or will there be an opportunity to ride on the eastern end of this ferry move?

The trip to ride will be on the Kentucky Railway Museum's line.

There is another C&O 2-8-4 Kanawha Steam Engine collecting rust, #2705 at the B&O Railroad Museum In Baltimore, Maryland.  It is very nice to learn that the sister engine #2716 will be eventually restored for active operation in Kentucky.

There is more than just one other 2700 series around.  As I recall there was one in Lynchburg, VA, Dennsion, Ohio (2700), and one in Washington Court House, Ohio.  I believe I am missing one or two besides the one you mentioned 2705.

PS I have an interesting shot of 2700 as seen from the firemans side inside the cab of a departing ex GTW 4-8-4 6325 in 2002.  Have it on video, and a bit more cab ride.  I guess the 2700 is still there???

I might not be knowledgable of their current policy, but how exactly is the steam locomotive supposed to be on CSX trackage? I thought they ban all antique railroad equipment from touching the rails?

There is not an actual "ban" on steam. There has been a lack of enthusiastic corporate support once-upon-a-time, but consider what's happened in the last nine months. This is a new time.

The 765 used CSX to reach the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad last year: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4653346,4655124#msg-4655124

CSX towed Nashville Steam's 576 to greener pastures a just a few weeks ago: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4749661,4752209#msg-4752209

The level of corporate support that CSX has leant to static, operating and steam locomotives under restoration (as well as other qualified historic preservation organizations) in recent years is remarkable and worth paying attention to.

These higher profile moves are happening because CSX has a level of comfort and security in the work being done, the locomotive in question and has people intimately involved with the plans and logistics of each group.

We tend to focus far too much on "recent history" in train-world, instead preferring the "glory days" over "right now." Well, this the kind of stuff that's happening "right now."

Only when the present is past do we ever call them the glory days...

In the past CSX knew it's physical plant (rails) could not withstand dynamic augment from live steam and could not hold gauge against non articulated equipment live or dead. Now it's a matter of appearances.....the track may or may not be suitable...but we'll make the moves to look good. And there's lot to be said for good will.

Dynamic augment could be a serious problem with certain steam locomotives, witness the reports of the ACL class R 4-8-4's pounding the rails.  But when it comes to the NKP 765, it is not an issue.  It is so well balanced that during the 2007 overhaul, the counterweights were checked on each side and Project Manager Glenn Brendel determined that they were so close to equal that we didn't touch the counterbalances.

You can ask the operating officials at the various railroads where the 765 has operated in recent years about dynamic augment. They won't even know what you are talking about.  It is a non-issue in this case, and that includes thousands of miles of running at 40 mph and even some at 70+ mph.

There is absolutely nothing true in your statement. If a railroad couldn’t withstand one well balanced steam locomotive, there is no way it would handle multiple trains of 8 to 10 thousand tons every day.

Besides, if a steam locomotive were to have so much dynamic augment that it would destroy track, it would destroy itself long before it got up to speed.

Even weight isn’t a major issue as most GE AC locomotives weigh almost as much as a Berk/Kanawha.
