Steam & Excursion > OTD: UP 4-8-2 #7000 ('49)Date: 04/16/19 03:18 OTD: UP 4-8-2 #7000 ('49) Author: valmont Date: 04/16/19 07:28 Re: OTD: UP 4-8-2 #7000 ('49) Author: Bob3985 The UP 7000's were handsome locomotives. They used them on the Yoder sub for power on the mixed freight 353/354.
For the majority of the time it as the 7002. Bob Krieger Cheyenne, WY Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/16/19 07:29 by Bob3985. Date: 04/16/19 10:16 Re: OTD: UP 4-8-2 #7000 ('49) Author: coach Those things had very "plain Jane" faces. Later UP engine faces looked more distinctive and handsome.
Date: 04/16/19 11:49 Re: OTD: UP 4-8-2 #7000 ('49) Author: Elesco It has a very clean appearance, thanks in part to the absence of a feedwater heating system or front-end throttle with an external drypipe running back to the turret. And the top corner bevel of the tender lines up with the cab roof, which is always a nice touch.
Here is a link to a photo on the UP website showing 7002 outfitted in the late 30's with Timken rods and roller bearings. https://www.up.com/timeline/data/assets/img/dc3af87df9b9a6e5c5f652305977712e/ENLARGE-Mountain_type_4-8-2.tif.jpg Explanation is provided at steamlocomotive.com: https://www.steamlocomotive.com/locobase.php?country=USA&wheel=4-8-2&railroad=up Edited 1 time(s). I don't recall the number off hand, but the chase is in our "Union Pacific Steam Classics-Volume 2" along with Big Boys, etc. I always thought they were nice looking engines. Greg Date: 04/16/19 12:28 Re: OTD: UP 4-8-2 #7000 ('49) Author: santafe199 That's a beaut, Vince! I have an idea these engines we're common on my hometown KP before I was born ('55). Can anyone confirm this nostalgic notion?
