More progress. That is good as time is flying.

Interesting to note that they have kept the original No. 8 brakestand, and did not substtute a 26C as has been done on so many other preserved/restored steam locomotives. This tells me that UP must have a stock of spare parts for the 8ET brake equipment, because these parts are pretty much unobtainable on the open market (WABCO stopped making them in the early 1960s, IIRC). Also, I take issue with the UP saying that the pictures are of the "brake system". Sorry, no.The brakestand shown is less than half of the full brake system, which also includes the air compressors, distributing valve, brake cylinders, etc. When I worked for WABCO/WABTEC, we were always cautioned to refer to "WABCO Brake Equipment", because what we supplied did not necessarily include many smaller accessory parts such as check valves, cutout cocks, hoses, etc., which were often obtained independently by the locomotive/car builders, so if we referred to a "WABCO Brake System" any legal eagle would take that as accepting responsibility for all parts, even if we had not supplied them.

That’s so cute, all the little handles painted red....
Irregardless of the function or fluid/gas being controlled.... everything is so cute-sy red.
To identify all the handles from other do-dads....?

Maybe a red whistle cord?

I’m not sure this is a “cute” deviation from common steam era practice. Isn’t that the way the locomotives were delivered from Alco?

Wonder if they painted all the insides of the air brake equipment, has was done with 844's air brake equipment?

Also looks like there’s still no insulation in the cab. As you have pointed out, it could be possible they won’t bother covering up that portion of the boiler. Would it even be feasible to go back and apply jacketing in the cab at this point?

Maybe not a great comparison, but 6 years ago when I flew in the local Museums B-25
you have to grab the YELLOW handles as you climb to the interior and avoid the RED ones.  Just me and the 3 crew members for that flight, and no
airport terminals to deal with :). Most handles in steam I have seen are brass or just worn down to the metal!

When I first started as a fireman (diesel) and the engineers let me run, I had to keep a flashlight between my legs to find stuff in the dark until I got more comfortable with the cab layout. I think red handles are a good idea on that prehistoric brake & control stand for locating stuff fast in in poor light. They'll figure it out by the time the paint wears off.

I look forward to all the people trackside yelling in anger about the red handles in the cab being historically inaccurate. I'm sure their roar will drown out the sound from the locomotive itself.

Doesn't matter if you're color blind!

You win the comment of the day!!!

I'm pretty sure the assembled masses will also be quite upset with the crew wearing safety vests, since no steam crew in antiquity ever did anything like that!!

Yes. The acknowledge button for the UP Cab Signal system as well as the C&NW ATC.

Yes the roar of the diesel(s) pushing 4014 down the track :-)

With regard to the second photo, which is looking down upon the brake handles, is that honeycomb /egg-crate tan colored material /object behind the brake handles part of the insulation?
