Steam & Excursion > The DreamDate: 05/06/19 07:16 The Dream Author: KY_Railfan Now that the 4014 is up and running, something many people thought was a dream until a few years ago, let's dream about the "ultimate"(?) rail fan dream. How about 844, 3985 and 4014 triple heading over a re-opened Tennessee Pass? I know there isn't a snowball's chance in h--l that this will ever happen, but if you're going to dream, dream big!

Get C&O 1601 out of the Henry Ford, get it restored, and reshoot the tug-of-war scene in "Danger Lights" featuring it and 4014! Somehow, I doubt the couplers survive the encounter. Its also old rehashing of old news. Date: 05/06/19 08:11 Re: The Dream Author: Jsporseen If you really want to dream, how about a triple header with 4449 (the most photographed steam locomotive), 844 and 4014. They could meet in LA and TH up Cajun Pass. There would be a lot of freight on CP but just the thought is exciting. I suspect most have seen the 23 minute video of 4449 and 844 racing up that pass in 1989. If you haven’t, find it on you tube, you’ll enjoy it.
I’m 80 years old and still dreaming. Date: 05/06/19 08:27 Re: The Dream Author: bioyans For me, it would be a Santa Fe 5011-class 2-10-4, to pair up with either 2926 or 3751.

I'll place the first bet on 1601 if put back into her prime condition... The tested/confirmed 7,498 dbhp of the C&O H-8s (C&O #1608 specifically) topped the previous results of about 6,300 by the UP Big Boys and N&W "A"s by a surprising margin, and there are several stories indicating the actual tractive effort numbers on the H-8 were well above the published ones. Date: 05/06/19 09:38 Re: The Dream Author: wcamp1472 Remember, T.E. estimates are calculated on steel wheels on dry rails....
Haven’t seen any numbers based on sanded rails... My empirical experience is that tractive effort increases (in the vicinity) of 17% to 22%... with sanders at every driver, and rail washers, to blow the rails clean. My guess would be that 16 drivers on sand, & 4-safeties blowing, beats 12 drivers on sand, with four safeties blowing .. IMHO.. W. (NOW, UP 3985 vs. C&O 1600s, You’ve got a real toss-up... I guess it depends on who’s knuckle breaks, first...). Date: 05/06/19 10:13 Re: The Dream Author: eldodroptop My Dream is actually somewhat obtainable. I would love to see 4449, 611, 844, and 2926 come together at one location. Once there, put them through different trials, under objective measure, to see once and for all which 4-8-4 is really the greatest.

Perhaps, until there is a slip... One of the few reported problems of the Alleghenys was increased rail wear because they were so well balanced they didn't slip. There are stories of H-8s leaving Huntington WB (loaded coal trains for Toledo) having doubled with the wrong cuts of cars and actually pulling a double length train, and still making it up to and over Limeville bridge before the issue was noted and they were told to continue... The TE ratings were to reduce issues from too much drawbar strain.
