The Morning Foam
Author: walstib

Rarely have I even had coffee before 7 a.m., but this crew was lined up nicely before 7 at Granger, Wyoming yesterday to photograph the 4014.

You would think they've never seen a train before, or something.

And, what do you suppose the average age is among that group????

Looks like the sheriff is there also. Contrasted to comments yesterday about younger railfans, these are the older ones!

Great capture.

Regards, Jim Evans, An older One.

Gentleman on the far left looks like your typical European gricer.  What, it's cold out here?

He's actually a Wyoming Highway Patrolman, and he was there with his camera just like the rest of us.

At first glance, I thought he might have been the Granger police chief. I had an encounter with the Granger chief back in 2012 during an 844 chase. He cited me for exceeding the 20 mph speed limit. Ever since then, I have always been very mindful of my speed when in Granger.

Yesterday there were two buses loaded with fans — a white one, and a darker-colored bus. I noticed the bus passengers tended to all be older folks. The younger guys tend to be driving themselves.

Here's a shot of the white bus at Granger, just after its passengers scattered toward the tracks.

Was that the Trains mag bus they advertised in the magazine that would be following the train?

Chasing in a bus.. Why not?

Back around 1992 or so in Texas, I chased 3985 in a Limo.

Did everyone get quiet when the train got close?

I suspect the white bus might be the Trains bus, but I'm not sure. I haven't been close enough to ask anyone. You would think they would have a Trains logo on the bus; they do have the Trains logo on at least one chase car I saw.

This is the Trains Magazine bus. Being part of the tour has been great. They have taken us to some great locations and I like not having to deal with any of the driving.

I once chased the 4449 on a bicycle from Oaks Park to the end and back when it was running the Christmas Trains in Portland. Granted it was only going about 20mph, but hey...I was chasin' it!

What a great shot of a once in a lifetime moment!  This really captures the spirit of 4014.

A definition of “gricer.”
Author: Alco251

“Gricer” is a term in the UK that means “freeloading railfan.” The UK tourist railroad guide—I’m sorry I don’t have my copy handy—admonishes tourist railway visitors to NOT be a “gricer”—traveling great distances to visit and photograph, but not making donations, buying tickets or patronizing the gift shop.

In addition to the shorts, I see a pair of gloves elsewhere in the group.

So what's the gender ratio here?  Am I seeing 17 males to 1 female or is it 18 males?  Either way, appears pretty typical.

All are in violation of UP request to be 25 feet from rail, and 4 are in fowl and in trespass.Thats what the Train Master or RR Police sees.

The UP has always been pretty lenient during steam operations.

Thats

The "Train Master" was a 2400HP diesel from Fairbanks - Morris, so I'm sure it wouldn't care.

or RR Police sees.
