4014's Water car Flags...
Author: oklachaser

I would like to say a big thank you to Ed & the UP Steam crew for all their long hours & hardwork they put in to rebuild & get this beautiful steam engine back into service. Also I would like to thank everyone who have been posting their photos & videos of this wonderful train.

I was showing my Dad some videos of the train the other day to show him the wonderful job the steam crew had done. My Dad lived by the Frisco tracks here in Kellyville when he was young & always loved watching the steam engines go by. He is not a railfan but does enjoy seeing my photos that I have taken. He loved seeing the videos of the 4014. Not long into watching one of the videos he asked why the flags on the water car were flying backwards. To be honest I hadn't even noticed them. I was so concentrated on watching the 4014. He was not critizing he just pointed it out. His Dad had served in the Navy during WWII & knew that the field of blue is supposed to be leading.

Like I mentioned neither of us are critizing, I was just wondering if it was an oversight.

I don't think they had a chance to turn the auxiliary water car with the flag, since it was last used behind 844, on the Cheyenne Frontier Days Special, last July.

In the days of sailing ships where movement was by wind at their back what you see on the water car is the way the union jack was displayed. This is Wyoming where there can be tail winds.

They have had a number of opportunities to turn that car over the past couple of weeks or so. But they haven't.

Perhaps they were a little preoccupied getting the locomotives ready.

In all fairness to the steam crew, not really. They have been rather busy.

Besides, in the grand scheme of things, how much does it really matter?

Have you ever forgotten something, some minute little thing, when you went on a trip?

Clearly a mark of how successful the whole mega project has been so far if we're now discussing mini issues like which way the flag is flying on the A tank.

Obviously it's because the tank needs to get turned someday when there's nothing more important to attend to.

Congratulations to Ed Dickens, his whole crew and to the UP's senior management for a job well done.

Can they pump water from either end of the auxiliary tender into the centipede tender?

1) The water is NOT "pumped", it is all gravity feed.

2) Yes, there are large cam-loc fittings on both ends of each auxiliary tender.

No offense intended to anybody, but personally I’d rather it not even have the flag on it. I always liked the huge “UNION PACIFIC” lettering better.

+1 to this.

If it were up to me the aux tenders would be black and would probably just have "UNION PACIFIC" in not terribly huge lettering.
At any rate, not everything needs a flag.

From a strictly visual point of view, I agree completely....locomotives.....black........train......UP yellow scheme.

What US athletes do with "Old Glory" when they win is far worse than UP's transgression.

I agree with your statement they have disrespected it and the song both many times. Others say they are offended by the pledge due to some of its language. But I feel those who have the true dog in the fight are the VETS, even those who speak from the grave by there actions giving there life so we can live free. May they rest in peace.

I like the yellow on them. Pays homage to the big blow they were converted from FEF tenders for. They shouldnt have the flag on them at all I think.
