The Central Pacific Lived On In Many Places After Promontory!
Author: LoggerHogger

After the joining of the rails at Promontory on May 10, 1869 the Central Pacific continued to thrive and expand it's rail trackage over the next several decades.  The plan to link the East with the West so as to expand growth in the West had succeeded beyond expectations and the Central Pacific was there to reap the benefits.

Along with the CP's expansion of it's rail network was the similar expansion of it's roster of steam locomotives.  One such new locomotive was this one built by The Schenectady Locomotive Works only 13 years after the Last Spike Ceremony at Promontory.  She was originally Central Pacific's #110 when built in 1882.  Later, whe the CP became the Southern Pacific, she was assigned the number 1278 and then later #1349.

Long after her years with the CP were over, #1349 found herself in logging duty with the Red River Lumber Co. of Westwood, California.  She is show in this photo at Westwood in November, 1939 after she had seen over 57 years of continuance service.

The legacy of the Central Pacific stretched over many decades and in many places in the West in the years after the last spike was driven at Promontory.

Amazing the quality of photos back then without retouching, computer controled cameras and such.  Nice to see how they really looked.
