Anyone have any good technical info on the D&H E series 2-8-0's ?

What are the triangular shaped legs at the base of the firebox ?

They certainly seemed to have been formidible machines.

Back in the 60's or 70's Trains mag had a pretty detailed article on the D&H Consolidations, pointing out that D&H was probably the only road that used Challengers as helpers on trains with a 2-8-0 road engine.
