Some Of The Best Steam Photography Takes In The Whole Scene!
Author: LoggerHogger

While the ultimate goal in the realm of photographing steam locomotives at work is to capture the essence and the details of the engine itself, some of the best photographers did not lose sight of taking in the environment that these locomotives operated when preserving them on film.  Such was the case when this photo was taken.

Here we see not only Southwest Lumber Mills 2-8-0 #2 but also the mill yard that she brought her logs to on a daily basis.

With the entire scene used as the focus of this steam portrait, the handsome sky with it's dramatic clouds only ads the final touch to a wonderful view into steam railroading of the past.

Not to mention that puffy white clouds are really tough to catch in B&W film photography. Often additional filters have to be added to the camera lens, or a whole lot of darkroom work needs to be accomplished. The photographer performed a lot of work including the composition of the photo.

Flagstaff.  The #2/#25 spent its entire career working out of there, it's now on display next to the depot downtown.  .

Here's a slightly different take on a clearer day...doesn't show as much of the sawmill as Martin's photo.
