This is NOT UP 4000 Big Boy, but UP 3985 moving through the switches as she departs Elko,Nevada, 1992, after NRHS San Jose Convention. You can see the front engine sway left and right as she negotiates the switches and curves, watch the main boiler in relation to the front driver engine, and the front headlight Is a guide too. This is Incredible weight, as the front driver of a 4-6-6-4 is the front 4-6 wheel arrangement part, that is hinged to move left or right, thus enabling the big beast to negotiate tight switches and curves, without restriction. Of course the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy is set up the same way up front. (My description above is worded for kids and the video to see for those who don't know, also for the experienced to enjoy also at the same time!) Is Not HD, Is Converted VHS to Digital. a question--probably answered several times here before----please excuse if this a repeat. what supports the boiler, during straight running and thru curves? thanks for your explanation Date: 06/01/19 04:13 Re: Steam Articulation Study 7-30-1992 UP3985 East, Elko,Nevada Author: DavidP Cool video...but what were they burning back then? Rubber tires? Quite a contrast to the clean stacks we saw on last month’s doubleheader.
Dave Date: 06/01/19 06:32 Re: Steam Articulation Study 7-30-1992 UP3985 East, Elko,Nevada Author: Bob3985 We were getting fuel from Sinclair and it wasn't the best at that time. Also Lynn was firing and he tended to start out a bit behind on pressure so he could play catch up and make more smoke. Steam locos tend toward cleaner stacks once they get out and running on the mainline. When in the yard like this there so many variables like cylinder cocks open and throttle changes that effect the draft.

Not to mention that this was prior to the air intakes on either side of the firebox being modified, plus the addition of a manual damper in the air intake duct for the firedoor. After about 2002 or 2003 she became quite a bit easier to fire. You had to keep your eyes on things before or you could go in the toilet in a hurry. I was lucky and never did. Came close but got saved by a red signal. I miss her.
