Steam & Excursion > articulateds and the boilerDate: 06/03/19 10:49 articulateds and the boiler Author: dougd If this is a stupid question, please be patient with me--I am not a "rail" as many of you are.
On 3985 and 4014,the boiler and fire box are firmly connected to the rear engine. But the boiler is not so firmly connected to the front engine and trucks allowing the articulation between the 2 sets of trucks to follow the curves. Am I accurate so far? The boiler remains in a straight line as the front trucks follow the curvature of the tracks. The boiler is exceedingly heavy, What supports that weight as the steamers travel down the tracks? It appears to me that something must keep the boiler from moving either up and down or side to side , or just from vibration. Can someone explain what supports the boiler from the movement which would occur in normal travel ? Date: 06/03/19 10:55 Re: articulateds and the boiler Author: sgriggs I believe there are precision ground plates on both the underside of the boiler and on the front engine bed that form a weight-bearing contact, so that even when the boiler front swings away from the front engine the forward weight of the boiler is supported. The plate surfaces are fed by pressure lubrication in a similar manner to the valve gear and articulated steam joints. I suspect there must be shims or some arrangement to adjust the amount of weight carried by the front and rear engines.

Is the answer in John Bush's response where he refers to "a large horizontal mating surface?" . Does Kratville have a picture? I have the book, 1963 edition or is there a picture in your 2013 response, unrecognised by me? this would be big pieces of metal sliding atop other big pieces of metal bearing enormous weight, as well as with surface to surface movement. With sufficient lubrication there is limited wear? Thanks D. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/03/19 19:14 by dougd. I picked up my copy of "The Mohawk That Refused to Abdicate" and enjoyed Morgan's articulation. I intend to read the rest of the book again. Also saw a comment from an old friend who does not plarticipate here now. Thanks, "Larry".

I read somewhere that the tongue of the front engine, at the hinge point, also bears about 7 tons on a Big Boy.
