A couple days ago I posted a 1939 photo of Southern Pacific #4175 and her train stopped at the station in Reno, Nevada.  Several questions were raised about the station and where it was.  A few also remembered that the fabled "Silver Shortline" also called that Reno station home.  Here is a look back at that famous railroad and her passenger trains using that same station in downtown Reno.

The year is 1949 and time is rapidly running out for Nevada's Virginia & Truckee Railroad.  This would be her last full year of operation.  On this sunny afternoon, V&T 4-6-0 #26 and her short passenger train has just arrived from Carson City, having left Minden, Nevada earlier in the day.  Bay Area railfan, L.L. Bonney is on hand to capture the casual atmosphere surrounding the arrival of the V&T's little train of wooden cars.

Seeing this image and the one from a few days ago certainly makes one think that it would have been fun to hang around this Reno station each afteroon to see just what kind of trains arrived to stop there.

The 64 Dollar question is,  does any part of this train still exist?

Locomotive 26 caught fire in the Reno Roundhouse and was scrapped in 1950 after the line closed.
Combine 18 was set on fire while on display near the Carson City Airport, but survives at the Museum in Carson City. It would be a project to restore but well worth the effort.
Caboose 24 was restored as Nevada Copper Belt Caboose and is at the Museum in Carson City.
