The discoloration on the forward piston rod doesn't look good (IMO). That area should be bright from running through the packing in the stuffing box. Just from the photo it looks like lube oil is coking or at least collecting on the rod. Just my observation...

Remember, both sides of the front engine had leaking piston rod packing, thus the discoloration on the piston rod from the valve oil. Not really a big deal.

Ah, makes sense. The oil we're seeing is then the lube oil from inside the cylinder blowing past the packing and onto the rod and guide?

Yes, but the term "lube oil" is misleading. The valve oil (steam oil), which is water soluble, is sprayed into the short steam pipes to the valves, plus into the steam inlets at the cylinders. Being a high temperature synthetic water soluble lubricant, it travels wherever the steam goes, and eventually exits out the exhaust stack. When a piston rod packing is leaking a bit, then it is visible on the piston rod.
