Before UP 4014 arrives in Omaha, I thought you might like a glimpse of the last time a Big Boy moved on rails in the Omaha area. In 2001 the UP shops were being removed and the 2 locomotives that were on display on the north side of the shops along Abbott drive needed to be moved.
6900 and 4023 were not far from a  live track, so the locos were moved from North Omaha down the connecting tracks near the river front to BNSF Gibson yard and then up to the station area. They were stored in the station area untill they had their historic move by equipment movers over the streets to present day Kennefik Park.

This video slide show has as it's sound track the audio of the engines being moved along the river front. The first photo shows south of the UP bridge on the river front and the photos are in basic sequential order moving south to Gibson and then backing up the hill first to the Burlington side and then over to the UP side. The last 2 photos show where the shops were. The building farther back is the UP car shops that lasted slightly longer tahn the engine shop.

One word of warning, if you are squeamish about unlubricated metal parts, you best not listen.

Thanks for the memories Rick. Can't believe it was 18 years ago we watched this. But I was still working for Amtrak then and that was 18 years ago. Also didn't remember I had Mom's van that day.
Thanks for all the help with the oil burner. The crane moved under it's own power tonight.

You're right, Rick.  It sounds like Bush didn't use enough grease in his pre-move preservation efforts!

Yep, filling those 4 cylinders is an all day job.
at least we know 4023 won’t roll off the hill it’s on now.
