SP 4449 makes Popular Mechanics!
Author: HotWater

I saw on that "other site" about preservation (RYPN) that Popular Mechanics just did a really nice piece on SP 4449. I will attempt to provide the link, but it it doesn't work, I'm sure simply going to the Popular Mechanics site will work.

EDIT: My attempt didn't work. See the next post down for the correct link.

OK, thanks. I'll go back up and edit/delete that and refer everyone to your post.

There's also a "Badass" UP 4014 article...

Awesome peice, saw her back in 84 and she's been my no. 1 steam engine ever since, it sucks about Amtrak's policy which is bull crap and that's because of Richard Anderson, but I know I need to head up to Portland to see her someday!

I just visited the Heritage Center yesterday. Was very impressed with the facility. Ran into Doyle and was able to get an updated pic with my son. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

thanks for the kind words about the Orwgon Rail Heritage Center.   our volunteers are quite proud of our accompllishments and our future plans (turntable, etc).  while ours is a working museum we still try to keep the place relatively clean.   we really, really like the fact that we can and do host young, old, infirm, limited ability, and all those between.   the other day we had a fellow who was blind and in a wheel chair hugging one of the 4449 drivers.....still brings tears to my eyes when I remember we can do that.
we are open:  thursday and fridays, 1 to 5 and saturday and sunday noon to 5.   2250 SE Water Avenue, Portland OR.
and yes, the 4449 and Doyle are stars of our "show"....the OR&N 197, SP&S 700, PA are also "sort" of neat.              Arlen

One of my favorite places.  Wish I could get there to volunteer once again.
