The Number Of Changes Made To This Locomotive Is Quite Amazing!
Author: LoggerHogger

Ordinarily, a railroad that has a locomotive builder design and build a steam locomotive to their exact specifications, left that locomotive alone after they received it from the builder and placed the engine in service.  Such was not always the case, especially when it came to logging railroads.  We see a prime example of how many changes a logger would make to even one of the locomotives they had ordered new from the factory.

Some of the changes we see here to Simpson Timber 2-8-2TT #12 were necessitated by the fact that timber was being logged farther from the mill site at Shelton, Washington that when the engine first arrived new from Baldwin in 1923.  The other changes were simply as a result of making the engine more convenient for the crews to operate and service and to add additional safety appliances for working in the woods.

Can you spot all the changes that have been made to #12?

I'm very familiar with all these changes.  However, the locomotive remained pretty much in it's original form until the late 1940s when they closed Camp 3 down.  No longer assigned to a logging camp, the #12 then ran out of Shelton.  That's when they added the tender from 2-8-2 #5 as it was being scrapped.  At this time they also changed the original wooden pilot to one made of steel, which, incidentally, wound up on their first diesel #900!

Pete, is just being modest.  there are many more changes that we see here on #12 from her original Baldwin delivery confguration than just those that Pete mentioned.

Yes, that is one of the modifications.  You can see the factory fill hatch on the back of the side-tank on the top.

One big one is the addition of the tender and dog house & seeing that the reverse head light is still on the top of the cab.

Here is one item that did not get changed over the years, the Baldwin #56634 builder's plate from #12!!  This is my first plate from a logging 2-8-2T as originally built.
