4014 Big Boy Steam trail?
Author: N8HLY

Hello group. Please excuse this if it has been addressed before. I was watching some videos of the Big Boy as it worked it's way East. I noticed some steam coming out of a pipe at the rear of the engineer's side between the locomotive and tender. Could someone please tell me what that is for? Thanks in advance.

This has been recently explained several times;  refer to nearby, earlier posts and descriptions..

It is an ill-advised change in piping from all the other, ‘newer ‘, engines bought by U.P. in the 30s & 40s ...

There’s no sensible reason explaining the change ; —— they could do it, so they did it...
Because close-by it’s very hot water, it is highly hazardous and less safe, for the public and the crews, than U.P.’s conventional solution for the problem.
One thoughtless move and people get burned.

IMHO.

W.

Replying WITHOUT the snark, it's part of the blowdown piping

I believe they added a continuous blowdown to the 4014, and this exhausts below the cab as well.
