Lets remember that it IS a fund raiser for that group that gave up the 4014.

Great to see UP's Big Boy will be offering a Southern California excursion in October 2019.  Great opportunity for the group that helped put UP 4014 back in service.

And so it will be a fund raiser, if the club sells-out the trains. So, in a sense, the public will be compensating the museum for transferring the 4014 back to UP...I mean what did the UP give up to get the 4014, a fancy Geep and an ex-Rock Island Caboose? (Right, there was a boxcar thrown in for keeping files.) I'm happy that the 4014 is rolling again, but I will be lineside for the event and save the cash to cover a ticket to Europe (same price)  where steam is running somewhere all the time. Let's see what was the price of a ticket from Paris to Istanbul on the Orient-Express the last time I took it...$1500? And that included a bedroom in an original O-E sleeper, not the Barstow Motel 6.

If I understand the track configuration correctly, leaving from West Colton would mean the excursion will go up the Palmdale cutoff to the summit of Cajon Pass. (The line 4449 used in the "great race" with 844.)

In order to get to Barstow from West Colton, 4014 will need to cross from the Cutoff to the BNSF.  This can be accomplished at either Keenbrook or Silverwood.  When 4014 was towed east out of Colton in 2014, the crossover occurred at Silverwood.

It could also jump onto the BNSF in Colton, just outside of the yard, or part way up the pass at Keenebrook.   But I'd figure the route you mention, up to Silverwood just below Summit, to be the most likely.

Colton and up the hill is in the South Coast Air Quality Management District, same as Los Angeles.

I’m in!
This will be my third rail-transit event in October between NYC and Santa Fe. 
I don’t spend my money on middle-age guy stuff so it’s just train’s!

Well, maybe, but the biggest psychotics for UP to worry about down here lately, are the countless Homeless/and or Drug addicts, wandering all over the infrastructure, completely oblivious to any trespass or safety whatsoever. Even a trip to West Colton nowdays for any train crew is more complicated, by watching out for these people on the tracks, a trip into LA would surly result in some kind of accident or near-miss.

I'm witnessing that every day now just on the roads here in Riverside and surrounding cities, and I hear the engineers honking for trespassers more and more lately.

Best bet for 4014 is probably to stay on the inland routes, and away from the coast cities.
Even in inland cities, the pressure is getting high for oblivious people wandering onto the tracks, roads, and highways around here, it is actually getting pretty damn rediculous just around here in Riverside and surrounding communities I work in everyday. NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE.

Called it.... I assume it will exit through the Sunset route to visit Texas...

...And enter from Salt Lake-Las Vegas route? the same route it left California? But wondering where they will turn or wye the train, or at least the 4014, in Colton, both on the way down, then again after Barstow trip?

And hope this trip raises many $$$ for RailGiants by the way

We had someone move to our Podunk NW town when I was in early grade school who had basically never been out of the LA basin before moving. They actually thought that stars in the night sky weren't actually real before moving.

They can use the Baloon at Pepper (West Colton) to turn the whole train tailing into the yard. Then turn the whole train at Valley Jct/Jewell at Barstow.
