Steam & Excursion > From Any Angle These Steam Locomotives Were Surely Impressive!

With all the attention recently focused on the return to operation of Union Pacific's #4014 the world is again reminded just how imposing these giant locomotives are when they are under steam.  It was just a short half-century ago that these giants literally made the earth treble as they passed by as we see here.

The date is August 27, 1957, and UP 4-8-8-4 #4009 is in her last months of operation as she passes the photographer at Dale, Wyoming with yet another mile long freight.  The sheer size and power of this gargantuan machine is well captured in this black & white image.

This goes to show, that giants really did once roam the earth.

I agree, Martin.  Sunrise 8 August 2019 found UP 4014 Big Boy at Sidney, Nebraska, before making the run to Cheyenne, WY, completing the Great Race Across the Midwest trip.

In the first Image others hung out the cab window to see what was ahead as well back in the day.  Not just today as the current crew has done.  

Most on here dont know the way they did it when in service just guess.  Love those shots of both engines do hope to see it in service one day soon.
