Thinking of paying the 700...
Author: goduckies

I assume going up Cajon will be the real show of the trip. If I do coach will I have access to a baggage car or the Dutch doors open? Otherwise it doesn't seem worth it if I can't hear 4014 work.

Agreed, that's how I feel about any steam excursion. If I can't hear, see and smell out of an open window or door I won't be riding. I can get the experience of riding in a sealed steel tube on any Amtrak or commuter train. As always, this is just my two cents.

Open doors....dream on.   But what a fantastic trip,  one way in a sealed train and return on a real live chartered bus.  And at that price,  suuuuch a deal!

There is going to be a diesel working between you and the 4014 too, remember?  Either in power or dynamic brake coming down the other side.

Ok so many think the price is too steep then dont ride, but if one can afford the ride do it.  Without someone helping PAY for it they wont happen where do you people think the money comes from to pay for it?  Just like wanting free health care and college education who will pay for it?

Indeed it isn't worth a trip to Europe, in my opinion, but that's what we are being asked to "donate." When you realize that the taxpayers of LA County have provided space and other support to Rail Giants since the 1950s and are now being asked to further pay an absurd price for a one way coach ride to Barstow (Amtrak charges $31 for the same views) I beginning to feel that the Rail Giants got the short end of the "stoker" from UP by giving up the only repairable Big Boy. What did the museum and the citizen stakeholders get in exchange: a restored roadswitcher of no particular historic value, a restored caboose and an unrestored, eyesore of a box car PLUS the proceeds from the Barstow excursions ultimately provided by the same stakeholders that have supported 4014 from the being? I don't know whose idea it was, either the R&LHS or UP or both, that thought this was good PR move for the museum and the UP, but as a citizen of LA County and a former R&LHS member, I feel like my boiler tubes are being reamed. If I am wrong, then will someone from Rail Giants please stand up and explain how a $700 coach ticket is good all around for the stakeholders? Please speak up, I can't hear you over the hiss of steam!

Well, if 3985 isn’t restored, is it feasible for it to go down to Rail Giants? There, it can be viewed by the public rather than sit in the roundhouse unseen.

The citizens will pay for it like they do all over the First World, only there won't be a lot of PROFIT left over for the 1%. Same with 4014, if the prices are lower more will ride and more will share the burden and more will think well of the UP and Rail Giants--isn't that the idea--to "grow" long lasting support?

4014, 10 (sealed) cars and a dismal...for $700?

Gimme a break...
The “entire thing” is already a immense tax write-off, out the marketing/advertising department... that’s why they spend billions on advertisements on TV & other media.

The more the Corp. advertising expenses, the more UP gets to reduce the amount of “taxable profits”...

The $700 is an inexcusable JOKE..

Might’s we’ll make it $7,000!

IMHO..

I agree but I didn't have the nerve to say it...I'm a UP shareholder.

Being a share U.P. holder is a good thing...
i totally support the wisdom of spending marketing dollars on the preservation of a steam program..

Too bad other green-eye-shade, bookkeeper types haven’t t figured that out., yet.
Buffett’s BNSF could do a lot for & with the 2926, CSX could easily get a big write-off in sponsoring the 1309 restoration...
complete with roller bearings... (that fool that stole the crown brass inadvertently  opened the door to SKF (independent-Type) ‘spherical roller bearings”.. and boxes for the main drivers...only nobody thought of that...at the time...

They, SKF; have a whole catalog ( on-line) of suitable variants...
( see also ads from the 1940s,,,re-MILW 4-4-2 speedsters on SKF’s)

So, being a share holder means you have confidence in the ability of the decision-makers to manage all aspects of the ‘business’ including the marketing people....getting the mmaximum benefit out of the restoration dollars—— as a stockholder,
pits about increasing “shareholder value”.

it’s wise that they’re Charging the $700...you don’t have to,pay it , to get the benefit from those that DO pay..it eventually shows-up in iincreased stock values 😁 You Win!

That’s wise stewardship of your investments... further diversify and buy other RR stocks, too.

For approximately $700 a person can fly from LAX to Duluth, MN, get a couple nights lodging, and ride open window or side door baggage cars on an all day round trip behind steam locomotive DMIR 332.

No  diesel, and you get real coal smoke.

I was hoping 4014 leaving the museum would be 5511's chance to leave obscurity and go on display.

There will be more people chasing it than riding it......

Moving 5511 is going to be an expensive proposition,  agreed though that I'd love to see it out.

I read on the Rail Giants website that the baggage car Council Bluffs will be in the consist.  Perhaps someone from the club can post whether or not it will have open doors with the railfan Dutch door so passengers can hear the 4014.

Were the baggage car doors open though?
