Cass Climax in Operation

Climax #9 is operable! Trains Magazine, and several posts elsewhere show she is finally under steam. Some hot bearing issues, but to be expected, especially because this locomotive was so far gone!

I remember they showed a shot of that engine in the Pentrex video from the 90s. It looked to be in horrible shape. happy to hear it is now servicable.

Did No.9 make it up on the mountain?  Be nice to see any photos. What is the status of 2-truck Climax as it only needed Form 4 papers. It was one of the last steamers in America that ran without Form 4.

It hasn’t run up the mountain yet. This past weekend Climax 9 only ran along the C&O Greenbrier Branch main east from Cass and it also brought the first train along the C&O from Cass to Wanless since the flood of 85.

The river line isn’t opened all the way yet. The last thing now is a 40 foot bridge at Trout Run. The state of West Virginia was concerned about a species of fish under the bridge so they took over that part of the project. Had the state not gotten involved, the line would have already been done. Other than the bridge, everything else between Cass and Durbin is restored.

The photo posted above by josta is not of the Class C Climax 1551, which is at Cass, WV.  This is a photo (screen capture) from the video of the rescue of the wood cab, 1893 Climax "B" known in record books as X-28 as it was finally removed from the island it was trapped on since the 1950's at Romayor, Texas.   The rescue occurred in the Summer of 2014 by Wyatt Smith at The Retreat at Artesian Lakes, formerly known as Chain-O-Lakes Resort.
Here is a photo of X-28 taken a couple of months ago.
