Big Boy on the Move - Upstate New York
Author: train1275

November 16, 1984 was an interesting day in Upstate New York on the D&H.

Here Big Boy, UP 4012 pokes out of the tunnel at Tunnel, NY north of Binghamton, NY on it's journey from Bellows Falls, VT to Scranton, PA.

It was big but graceful. D&H stopped it here and the fans at ample opportunity to lens it. We asked if they would make a cut so Big Boy was full face out, but they said "No", but hey it didn't hurt to ask, back in the day when fans were much more welcome.

Lol... I live in upstate NY, and with all the 4014 action lately, seeing the title of this thread nearly gave me a heart attack.

Great photos, thanks for sharing.  It looks like a mid train helper (1984 version of DPU).  Sure looked better than it does now with Government maintenance who can't even keep it painted.

The paint was better back then. Government regulation has also required changes in paint formulas, better for health and the environment now, but harder to apply and arguably less satisfactory in application and longevity.
