Doesn't matter. Some of it is fake news. How do I know? I received an email from the 2926 president this morning and had a long conversation with the CMO on Saturday. First, running the engine does not in no way have anything to do with completion of the Castanada Hotel in Las Vegas (it's already open though some portions were undergoing restoration earlier this summer). Second, running the engine anywhere but its own siding requires permission and insurance agreements with NMDOT, Rio Metro, and/or Amtrak. The status of those discsussions are unknown by me, but I'm sure any operating agreement would be touted if it was near. That is the next big and most difficult hurdle to overcome especially since Amtrak discontinued support of special trains in March 2018.. However the poster was correct in saying that the track from our siding to the main needs work to bring it up to Class 2 track. That work is underway by Herzog and will cost just under $30,000.

Now a bit of news that has not been published - Unless something entirely unknown and unexpected occurs, the engine will move under its own power on its home siding before December. The remanufactured safety valves have arrived and will be tested shortly both off and on the engine under steam. Assuming sucess, the remaining cylinder valves and pistons will be installed and the engine steamed and moved under its own power for the first time since 1953! It's been a very long 17 year restoration and we are looking forward to it being a very Merry Christmas present to ourselves.

Visit http://2926.us/ for latest update and photos of Saturday's open house.

The first link is to the Trains Magazine website, which has some articles behind a paywall for magazine subscribers. The second link is to the NMSL&RHS website with a work update from last week and there is no paywall for that.

Nothing in the Trains Newswire article states or implies anything to the contrary.  Your claim of "fake news" is out of line for your second point.

OK, let's call it "incorrect reporting." The article implies that only those two issues will keep the engine from running excursions. In no way is that correct. The track upgrade is expected to be completed before this December to allow the tool car access to the siding. It like the completion of the Las Vegas hotel is a non-issue for operation of the engine from its current location for testing and in excursion service.

No current wye in Las Vegas; it would have to be reinstalled and some of the former track location is now in private hands. The engine would go to the French wye (the siding to the former York Canyon coal mine) for turning.

TRAINS is ;nothing but a paid wall, and I will not pay.  The rest of the MAG is 85 % worthless.
Yes I did pay this past year to see if any changes, but sorry to say NO.
