This is somewhat different from the consist noted for the California excursion. Comments?

This is the traveling consist for the "Experience" display car for the staff and invited guest riders.
Remember the excursion for Rail Giants is only a two day event out of this 60+ day trip around the southern tier of the railroad and I am sure the excursion consist is quite a different configuration.

Didn't the C&NW/UP have a passenger train named "The Challenger"?

Presumably named for the UP’s Chicago to LA all-coach train, which for much of it’s existence was combined with the City of Los Angeles as trains 103-104.  Many current UP passenger cars carry the names of the railroad’s premier passenger trains.

Also note that the 4-6-6-4 engines, such as the 3985, were nicknamed Challengers.
These cars didn't have names when in service.  These names were applied in the mid-1990s when these cars were reacquired and extensively restored.

What is the kw rating of the UP power car? Gallons of fuel? Can someone share a floor plan of the "walk through" power car? FWRHS needs to build its own and there might be some good ideas to copy.

Is that the plan for one of the Amtrak cars I've seen on their instagram?

Thanks to all!  I am sure that the consist will change, but I thought I saw a dome diner next to a regular diner in the photos.
Thanks again,

Joel -

My eyes also deceived me. The exterior of the "Walter Dean", rostered as UPP 9005, looks like a Dome-Diner because of one of the ends being rounded (IIRC, the alteration of one end into a Blunt End Observation car, was done for second owner Great America Tours who used it as a Dome-Buffet-Observation) and on the roof, what looked like an exhaust outlet (for the stove/oven) is actually a round antenna - but alas, it is back to being a Dome-Lounge with the blunt rear end's marker lights removed.

Yes. Began in 1936. C&NW dropped out of agreement in November 1955 and thereafter MILW handled the train Council Bluffs-Chicago.

Don't have time to find the link right now, but I've seen floor plans for these cars on UP's website. Somewhere they have a section with details about their passenger fleet.

Don,

The 9000-series domes were always lounges, originally built with round-edge blunt ends for end of train service.  Soon after introduction they had full doors and diaphragms added so the could be placed next to the diners in the consist.  The 8000-series dome diners had regular ends, and are most easily identified by the service door at the kitchen end.

Yes, i.e. someone knows. It should be listed on the train make-up paperwork provided to the train crew.
