Steam & Excursion > Two days chasing 4014Date: 10/01/19 22:04 Two days chasing 4014 Author: jbwest I flew into SLC, drove to Evanston for two nights, chased the 4014 from Green River to Morgan before heading home. It was a nice quick trip. Here are a few of my favorite pix, all from this morning when the temps were below freezing. The first two are leaving Evanston, and the third is arriving at Wahsatch. One of the reasons I like the first and third pictures is they show the forest of old code line poles that still line the UP in that area, I have no idea if any of them are still used but the UP sure used a lot of code lines, I don't remember anything quite like tht on the SP. The 4014 ran pretty much on the published schedule on Monday, but today they had a slow trip, leaving on the block of a westbound stack train, and dealing with some single tracking due to MOW way work west of Echo. By Morgan they were about an hour late and I had to give up and run for the airport.

Can't beat a great plume, and blues skies no less! I'd say that was a weekend NOT wasted chasing train(s). /Mitch Date: 10/01/19 22:21 Re: Two days chasing 4014 Author: luvsteam These are great shots. Having been there in April when it was also hovering around freezing, yes, the cold air really makes for the best steam shots. Appreciate your work!

I have been along this part of the UP for various reasons three times over the past six months, and I got the impression there is a lot of signal replacement going on although I am hardy an expert. Between the many code lines which appear to be still in good condition and new signals, I wonder if UP has been using old signal and communications technology longer than some roads, and is only now getting around to upgrading it. That is not a criticism because they may have simply wanted to get their money's worth out of an older system that worked, but now PTC is seriously changing the requirements. I wonder if we have any UP signal people reading these pages. JBWX Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/01/19 22:46 by jbwest. I'm glad Mr West's digi-camera was put to good use :-) John. After 80 years of trying hopefully I have learned something. Digital is so much better than film, all I have to do is remember to get up early.
