Don't know if this has been posted yet, but over on the FB page of Steamtown NHS, they've released a statement that the BigBoy 4012 is going to be asbestos abated and cosmetically restored. Glad they're paying some attention to her.

This is what it looked like at Railfest 2015.
I was informed  the paint started bubbling within months of the job  being done by contract painters.

For us old timers let's hope they do it on a better schedule than the 20 years it took them to restore a little 0-6-0 to service???  Your Federal gov't at its finest.

This will be at least the 3rd time they have done a cosmetic restoration of this engine in the past 25 years.  I suggest they put it inside or at least under a roof this time, or otherwise they will be back redoing this work in a few years.

Surprised that there is still asbestos on 4012, after the various "restorations" that have been done on it. I didn't see anything in that article about "asbestos abatement".

Poor surface prep is what will cause paint to bubble, My late father used to paint barns, barn roofs, grain bins etc. The company he bought his paint from told him they couldn't make a paint that was guaranteed to peel. It's all in your surface prep. If you don't remove oxidation etc. from the surface before you start you won't get a good result.

If the feds moved quickly, someone would scream discrimination or that they were left out of the bidding process, etc. Like it or not, the reason things take so long is a mixture of budget appropriation and contract bidding process. If you wish to propose a private/public partnership and can get it done quicker, then you should put your money where your mouth is. I believe you have been working on some "long term" projects yourself, between ATF 2 and the 614.

Asbestos abatement is part of the contract.  This is actually the first time the 4012 will have any serious work done to it since it was aquired by Steamtown - repainting does not qualify as a restoration.  Several years ago the park had several engines abated and painted, they've held up well since then as compared to the quickie spray jobs we've seen.  Most of the "big" engines are kept inside now, with the exception of the 4012 that's simply too long for any of the buildings on site.  Far be it for facts to get in the way of a good narrative, but 759, 2124, 6039 and a host of smaller engines have all been abated, cosmetically restored and moved under cover over the last few years.

A for the 26, it was "only" down for 17 years (yes, still way too long).  The government moves way slower than we'd like.  Such is life.

Maybe someone can paint the 614 next.

Good examples, Dave.  I don't know what Ross was
thinking when he said what he said - I mean, it's 2019.

No. 26 was previously owned by Jerry Jacobson of the
famed Ohio Central. He had restored it to operation on
site in 1981, a mere two years after purchasing the
locomotive from the owners of the former Jackson Iron
and Steel Co.

The government does indeed move slow!

No. 614 still looks pretty good, albeit, in green on display
at Clifton Forge, VA.  Maybe Ross can move it to Strasburg
to fill in for 611 after she leaves for Spencer, lol.

Great news regarding 4012, still.  She needed some work.
Maybe we'll finally see her with rods connected? and (gasp),
a normal number board!

Meant to add - an opportunity to see and photograph No. 4012 on display somewhere
other than where it's been parked for decades - perhaps AFTER the restoration, Steamtown
will make an opportunity of it - raise a few extra dollars for other projects.

Mitch, I like your idea.  Perhaps something akin to the recent 2124 night shoot.

I helped disasemble the 0-6-0 when I was a high schooler at NRHS Railcamp in the year 2000. They planned on having it in service within a few years time. No one at Railcamp had any idea it would take until we were all in our mid 30's before the locomotive would operate again! 

Did we not read recently that there is a $19 million/year budget there?

For better or worse it's in the 5 million range, if I recall.

There's a video of the locomotive sans tender being backed up on youtube. The sound! I guess it's the track? (crying out in pain?)

The exact video is called "Union Pacific Big Boy #4012 at Steamtown Scranton PA" by user Railfan Depot

 

They just had a contractor rebuild the shop leads and switches, otherwise I doubt the track would have held up.
