Steam & Excursion > Last Shot of 611... And The Editor's Revenge

Late Sunday as evening was coming on, we were set up for one last shot of 611 as she hauled her last train of the weekend back to Strasburg.

Kurt and I set up well back the track from the Esbenshade Road crossing.  Kurt set his camera and tripod up at the spot I get some shots on Saturday, while I went a bit further up the hill along the edge of some soybeans.  With the prevailing air currents coming from the direction of Paradise, I figured that sound would carry quite well.  Rather than use the camera microphone, I put up one of my AudioTechnica mikes on a stand and housed in "the blimp" windscreen.

Sure enough, the sound was quite audible as 611 whistled off from Paradise and blew for both a farmer's crossing and Black Horse Road.  It sounded great... but what was that circling in the sky around the train?  Uh oh.

The scene shifts to Kurt's camera as the train whistles off from its stop at Groff's Grove and heads our way.  However, what could have been some of the best sound of the weekend goes kerplunk as an ultralight came along, circling in the sky above the train.

Fortunately, after the train passed, Kurt managed to track down the circling plane with his camera.  This gave a certain smart-alec editor a chance to take a little revenge after the fact.

Hilarious Mary....you'll have to show me how to do that sometime.  I have lots of Helicopters from the 70's and 80's I want to take out, plus a couple of drones from 2016 shooting 611 around Roanoke!  I was going to ask if that was Orrville Wright in that thing, but the ending was far better than I had anticipated!!!

The end of that video is probably the funniest I have ever seen!  It shows something probably many of us would like to do to light weight planes or especially helicopters.  Great video!

Maybe some environmentalist tree hugging defense force aimed to take out that terrible smoking machine but they failed to check with air traffic control and hit the wrong target. Good laugh.

Same here. The unexpected is an element of humor. However even with telegraphing that something was going to happen, the ending was more than I ever could imagine.

The ending made my kids and I laugh pretty hard!
