Thunder on the Blue Ridge
Author: train1275

1. N&W 1218 blasts up the Blue Ridge making a run from Roanoke to Lynchburg on September 29, 1989 in a pouring rain.

2. I think this was the next day at Lynchburg turning to return to Roanoke.

3. The Master himself, O. Winston Link at Roanoke on September 30, 1989.

Definitely like each of your photos.  You caught #1218 at two historic locations and Mr. Link is an iconic figure.
Thanks for posting your photo series.

Obvious Photoshop, how could the train be going up that hill without a diesel?

I shot that location at the top of the grade in 1987 when 1218 was headed to Roanoke, and again in 2016 with 611 returning from Lynchburg.  Its the old bridge over the tracks to a house.  Was nice while it lasted (5 years) with both 611 and 1218 running at the same time.
As for Link, my first knowledge of him was when the book "Night Trick" was done for the N&W.  Living here at Batavia, Ohio on the line to Cincinnati we were pretty well known by N&W folks.  My dad was given the book by the local station agent, Joe DeCamp.  I still have it.  Of course bought a couple other Link Books later.  Thanks for the 1218 memory.

Didn't need one there from 2015-17
Top shot is eastbound at Blue Ridge grade summit bridge mentioned in previous post
Bottom shot is westbound at Villamont, just below the summit.
My photos from 5/2016
