"cajones" is plural. They are actual Spanish words. California was once part of Spain, and many locations have Spanish names. The Spanish influence only reached as far north as Santa Rosa and was mostly along the coast. It was the Spanish Missions that caused most of that influence. Mission Santa Rosa was planned but never built but gave it's name to a city that was built many years later. It's interesting to see how many areas by the southern border have Spanish names and it fades out as you proceed north. The north part of the state had not been settled by the time of the big influx of people during the gold rush and you find few names in Spanish up there.
