Steam & Excursion > Razorback Big BoyDate: 11/17/19 08:55 Razorback Big Boy Author: MaryMcPherson Yup.... yet another Big Boy video. This one shot Friday between North Little Rock and Van Buren, Arkansas.
George is in his seventies and mostly retired from the road trips. Kurt is in his sixties and decidedly not retired yet. And me? Well, I'm the wee lass in my late forties and the one that handles the logistics, location research, and most of the chase driving. We all have heard of the Union Pacific 4000's since we were kids. Of course we never though we'd see one run. Little Rock was too close to pass up so, like the Blues Brothers (or perhaps the Three Stooges), we got the band back together and we hit the road with cameras ready to go. The position of the crowd was carefully controlled by both Conway and Union Pacific police. We had planned to get a runover shot of 4014 at Conway tunnel. Before we got there however, we caught wind that there would be a substantial police presense at the tunnel (evidently there was a VERY close call there in the past). Hearing the police would be there, I left the "suicide camera" in the van when they dropped me off at the tunnel. As it turned out they were letting people set cameras up all over the place. They were perfectly willing to let folks have at it until they received word that the train was departing downtown; then it was strictly keeping people in the clear. Oh well. Shot myself in the foot on a "money shot." Shot myself in the foot on a "money > shot." Probably a good thing. Several years ago UP put out a PSA on people putting cameras on the tracks after someone did it on an 844 trip.
