More of 4014's last lap home yesterday
Author: highgreengraphics

Yesterday's cold last leg of 4014's amazing journey, going back to Cheyenne northbound on the DP Greeley Subdivision. Photo 1 - Moving right along in a swirl of fresh snow just north of Brighton, CO. Photo 2 - Crossing the South Platte River Between LaSalle and Evans, CO. Photo 3 - Rounding the curve approaching Speer Junction, WY.

Photo 4 - Triumphantly returning home beneath the landmark C&S Bridge at West Cheyenne, heading for the Steam Shop. Happy Thanksgiving to all, and perhaps especially to the Steam Crew and Union Pacific who gave the viewing public and railfans so much to be thankful for in this last year, UP's Golden Spike 150th Anniversary. === === = === JLH

Great photos!  Were you using a tripod or hand held?

Thanks.

Hand-held only. I have an industrial-grade Bogen tripod, and Bogen monopod from film days, but I like to stay mobile and those just slow you down. One must try to be first out at a crowded photo location, especially with lots of daisypickers or less seasoned railfans who are not in a hurry to set up at the next spot. It is said in manuals that for the camera Image Stabilization system to work properly, the camera should not be mounted on a tripod anyway. I personally like monopods, but I broke a strap and wrecked a camera because of catching one on a protrusion, and tore a seat with one, and tore the bottom tripod mount off another camera, yes in all cases trying to hurry. I reserve the tripod for video when I shoot that too, but doing both really slows you down! I was a rider in somebody else's car on this occasion so I traveled light anyway. === === = === JLH

Good to hear an accomplished photog say that.  I quit using a tripod years ago and it seems to work, given the higher ASA/ISO that digital facilitiates.  Tripods not only slow you down, but they take up valuable room on a crowded photo line.  But I always have one in the car just in case.  Every rule has its exceptions.  The pix are wonderful, steam in the snow has a special attraction.

All 4 photos are Great but #3 is truly Fantastic. I hope UP has a Plan to send this Great Locomotive to Eastern Pennsylvania sometime in 2020.
