CNJ 113 on November 30th
Author: OCtrainguy

On November 30th and December 1st, CNJ 113 (Project  113) ran Santa Trains from Minersville (PA) to Schuylkill Haven  and back in cooperation with the Reading & Northern.  I was able to photo the November 30th trips.  Now, onto the photos and videos.

1.  At Minersville, across from the station, the crew gives the engine a final look over before coupling up to the train.  Many thanks to the volunteers for getting this CNJ engine up and running!
2.  The engine is now ready to go
3. The train is heading to Schuylkill Haven and is approaching Cressona.

More to follow..

Continuing the photos…

4.  The first trip of the day just south of the Schuylkill Haven station.  I had wanted to photo the train at the station itself, from the grade crossing to also include the observation car parked there, but a group of railfans were adjacent to the observation car and I chose a different spot.
5.  Approaching the Route 209 overpass at Pottsville
6.  The second trip of the day just south of the Schuylkill Haven station.

Two videos to follow..

Two videos of the train from that day.

7.  The first train of the day about to pass under the Route 209 overpass.  I like the spot, but the train is real quiet here and you really hear more of the road traffic than you do the train.
8.  The second train of the day just south of the Schuylkill Haven station.  The engine sounded real good here!

A few photo of the GP30 to follow..

Last, but not least, three photos of the GP30 that was on the train.
9.   The first train of the day heading to Schuylkill Haven and is passing Westwood Junction near Pottsville.
10.  At the grade crossing just north of Cressona.  There used to be a blue “BECKS” sign here that I had used for a photo prop
11.  Passing through the yard in Cressona

It was a fun day and my son and I enjoyed seeing the steam engine running.  Again, kudos to those volunteers who worked on the 113 to get it up and running and for the R&N allowing the engine to run.  Hope you enjoy the photos and videos!

That whistle sound identical to the L&N whistle on Ky Ry Museum's 4-6-2 152.

Ooooh, I think I just figured out what the that tuscan red paint on the newly acquired F units might look like...

A very nice post. I liked the look of photo #4 and thank you for the effort. I was born & raised in Pottsville. On my trips back home I made a few stops to check the progress of the CNJ 113 restoration. I have yet to see it in action.

Photo four is a classic. It takes one by surprise because the smoke blowing back makes this look like a 1940's passenger train at speed pulled by a Pacific instead of a switcher!

Does anybody know what kind of whistle they are using ? I have an unmarked 5" single chime that looks just like it, but can't see the valve details in the photos.

Just curious ... How're the flanges on the front axle doing since restoration as completed?

VERY cool! Thanks for posting.

Kudos to the restoration crew! (I wonder why the engine number and Liberty logo are in orange. Or, did the CNJ actually do that sometimes?)

Beautiful video and sound. Love that whistle. How fast do they operate the 113?

That I will need to defer to the CNJ 113 group and the R&N.  I am not sure what the normal track speed is on that line.

And thanks to all for the compliments.
