More like his "job/position" was just abolished. Now the Cheyenne steam shop and Council Bluffs, IA executive passenger car shop, has no immediate manager/director overseeing each of their activities.

Begining of the end for all that?

No, I don't think so. All part of PSR, i.e. elimination of lots of middle management positions.

Yes, he got transferred to Omaha, quite some time ago, which also made him in charge of the Council Bluffs, IA passenger car shop/fleet.

He’s been in that role for awhile, with the title he has had. There have been some changes with the CB car shop very recently in general though.

So HotWater...What are these transfered people supposed to do?  Sell their house, transfer their car to another State, take their kids out of school, make all new friends, Buy another house. Learn where the stores are and hope their wives go along with their new life?

This has been the railroad managers' life (at least in the Operating Department) for the last 150 years.

Yes.

On the bright side my railroad would assist with the house sales, pay for a limited amount of short term housing at the destination and pay for the moving company.  I don't know Union Pacific policy.

Not just railroad, how about practically every large business, lots of folks moving
within the same company.  I have a new neighbor, his company just moved him
from Penn to here in Texas.

In my dads day ( 1915-1960) you either accepted the "promotion" and moved to wherever you were told OR you clearly understood the unwritten rule that your career would not include any further moves up the ladder and very probably include your being let go within the next 3/5 years. Dad was relatively lucky in that he worked for a small road ( CRRofNJ) that had only a handful of offline offices. We only moved 3 times during my school years and most of that at the beginning.

For those that worked for the big roads it was typical for middle managers to be moved 10-15 times during a 40 year career. It was very much part of the job.

For you guys who responded above...    I was offered a manager's job two states away.   I said no.   Well, ten years later, that entire company is out of business...and I am still living in the same house that I was born in.   Go figure.

The SP/UP bought three of our houses within eight years.  They paid appraised value or purchase price whichever was higher.

That certainly was/is the railroader's life, in many cases.  I knew a fellow who worked his way up the ladder in MOW and engineering.  Before he passed away some years back, he told me a lot of his career story.  One note was that he worked for the same railroad for 33 years and moved over 20 times in that career.

Is that really anyway to live...    just after you get your lawn, tomatoes and driveway looking nice.

It  is not just Railroads, as was said above.  I worked for a large company for 8 years and moved 3 times, then moved again when I left them.  After that, in my career with smaller companies and working for my self, I moved 5 more times in the next 40 years, not counting office moves within the same city or area.

Or, after decades of laying down roots.

My wife has worked for the same large, American corporation since she got out of college over 30 years ago. We're Blessed in that all 3 of our sons live in the same New Jersey county as we do. Grandkids are on the way. But, now her company makes statements about moving employees 1500 miles away to "lower cost" areas.

Gotta keep those dividends growing.

I watched most of my Dad climbing the food industry corporate ladder a la "Mad Men" in the 1960's and early 1970's. Mom and Dad ended up being burned out and exhausted. It left my Dad with a drinking and smoking problem he could never get over, with nothing and divorced, not a fun family life for us growing up. I vowed I would not put our own kids through that meat grinder and I never did, they lived in one house all their lives. The yang to the ying is that now they are having trouble getting out of the house and out on their own! === === = === JLH
