Couple of Whazzits.

I'm pretty bald and have been scratching my head trying to figure out what the hell these setups are.  They are in a Frisco 4-8-2.  Never seen anything like this.

Gosh no, much larger than that.

Way too many tubes to be 1.5” scale.

I'm trying to scale sizes. The individual tubes appear to be maybe 1" or so ? That first photo has the tubing passing through a welded shell hung from the top of the riveted shell with turnbuckles and there're are also what appear unconnected inlet and outlets. What are the other ends of the tubes attached to - another shell? The thing that gets me is the shell appears to be hung by the turnbuckles only, expansion downward?

Some  type of feedwater heater located in the smoke box? I thought feedwater heaters were located outside of the boiler containment .

I quit scratching my head long ago but it still turned into a barren wasteland up there.

It is a 4300 with type E superheaters and front end throttle.   View is toward the back of the boiler.

The device is directly below the steam dome.   View is looking backward toward the combustion chamber of the firebox with its radiating staybolts.  In picture 1 the dry pipe providing steam for the turret in the cab is plainly visible.  Dry pipe to the front end throttle has been installed in the second picture, but riser pipe into dome and probably a separator won't be installed until everyone is out of the boiler!

The tubes need to be 2", 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" for type E superheater.  If they're 2" tubes on 3" centers in a pattern 30 tubes wide, then the pattern would be 92" wide, which would fit nicely into a 98" diameter boiler.  That works, so I suspect they're 2" tubes.

I'm suspecting the box is some sort of foam collapsing device, due to its location right below the dome, but I can't find any specific information matching this device.

Frisco1522, did Frisco RR have bad water districts?

Oklahoma and TX water left a lot to be desired.   They were big on a "Gunderson Device" which was supposed to collapse foam.  I don't understand what this "cage" is for unless it was an experiment.   Engine has an internal Coffin FWH, but that's in the smokebox.  Really "baffles" me what it is.

Hummmmmm...   Possible.  Wish I knew more about it.

I'm sure it wouldn't have anything to do with the Coffin FWH.
