Hotwater or anyone do you know if they are working on a trip this summer or fall? Or has Amtrak all but killed 4449 being out on the mainline ever again?

No, i.e. NOT working on any future trips until Amtrak (Mr. Anderson) changes their current policy.

In the meantime, considering 4449's recent past runs on the P&W, is that shortline still an option or do they not allow public excursions?

You know after having worked at Amtrak for 20 years before being put on disability I must say Andersen is possibly the WORST president of this beleaguered outfit. No system timetables cutting dining car service; how would you like to take a train from New York Penn to Chicago without being able to get a decent meal on-board? Not having the ushers check for tickets when boarding the train? How would you like some homeless smelly person with possibly a criminal record sit next to you? You know Amtrak was founded in 1971 to relieve the freight railroads who were danger of going under the financial burden of running passenger service-and the freight railroads survived and thrived as a result (most of them anyway) IT WAS NEVER GOING TO MAKE A PROFIT! IF IT BROKE EVEN IT WOULD BE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT! How they could put a former airline executive in charge of this outfit truly amazes me. There is nothing in common between a rail passenger service and an airline with the exception that they transport people-airline have their airports paid by the localities they are located in they pay  for nothing but the planes their fuel and their crews and maintenance. they have no tracks no signal systems and no catenary, many people would be amazed if they knew some of amtraks infrastructure is over 100 years old and in some cases depended on a daily basis. Well that is the end of my rant with one final comment: FIRE RICHARD ANDERSON!!!!!!!

As I understand the lease with the UP-P&W prohibits anything but freight operation including passenger operations and speeders..

Since the management has changed dramatically on the P&W/W&P over the years, I personally don't believe you will see any more steam powered freight trains on any of their lines, as was done in the distant past.

help search for a rich well connected Oregon State University alumni who wants a steam charter to Corvallis for a civil war game between the duckers and beavers....that is the way these things can and have happened...... or another reason for UP to pair up.....Arlen
