Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo!
Author: LoggerHogger

With new an gleaming diesel power parked in the forefront of this scene, we are lucky to pick out the working steam power in the center in the distance.  SP #6100 and UP #1400 appear almost as sentinels presiding over the passing of steam here.

Steam power was rapidly taking a back seat to the diesels by the time of this photo.

What is also interesting is that the photo captures the very first Southern Pacific F3-unit set next to the very first Union Pacific F3-unit set!

Are location and date known?

I am hoping someone can fill in the location and perhaps a rough date.

State could be Utah as just a guess.

No letter suffix, it's definately after 1949.

I believe UP took delivery of its first F-3s in fall of 1947. Maybe Ogden?

Colton was my guess.  Thanks for confirming.

Or as it became to be known, "Old Colton", neat shot, lotsa history there, wonder if that's a UP helper set.

Before seeing the other responses, my guess was Colton, CA as well, looking east as others have stated. Great image!

Why would UP need a helper set here? They don't go to Yuma.
More likely a SLC to LA freight making a set out/pick up from the interchange tracks in the yard.

Because in later years the UP helper sets were stationed on the Colton interchange track, was curious as to if that
was the case. Or did the helpers work out of Riverside, just wondering.

UP helpers worked out to the B yard/A yard in San Berdoo off Rialto Ave.  Looks like the SP depot in Colton looking East

The only places I ever saw the UP helpers work out of was San Bernardino and Victorville.

Where did UP service their Cajon helpers?  I don't recall a UP locomotive maintenance facility in the San Berdoo-Riveside area.

Being on the helpers wasn't a long term assignment. Units were drawn out of the pool.
IIRC they fueled and sanded at the ATSF engine facility in San Bernardino.
Units were forwarded to East LA for inspections.
