Steam & Excursion > Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo!Date: 02/05/20 02:52 Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: LoggerHogger With new an gleaming diesel power parked in the forefront of this scene, we are lucky to pick out the working steam power in the center in the distance. SP #6100 and UP #1400 appear almost as sentinels presiding over the passing of steam here.
Steam power was rapidly taking a back seat to the diesels by the time of this photo. Martin Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 02/05/20 02:57 by LoggerHogger. Date: 02/05/20 05:39 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: raytc1944 FANTASTIC!
Date: 02/05/20 05:50 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: VintageMac What is also interesting is that the photo captures the very first Southern Pacific F3-unit set next to the very first Union Pacific F3-unit set!

Date: 02/05/20 06:37 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: LoggerHogger I am hoping someone can fill in the location and perhaps a rough date.
Martin Date: 02/05/20 07:00 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: czuleget State could be Utah as just a guess.
Date: 02/05/20 07:22 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: Arved No letter suffix, it's definately after 1949.
Arved Grass Fleming Island, FL Date: 02/05/20 07:24 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: UP3806 I believe UP took delivery of its first F-3s in fall of 1947. Maybe Ogden?
Tom Date: 02/05/20 07:51 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: BCHellman Colton, looking east.
Date: 02/05/20 08:04 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: LoggerHogger Colton was my guess. Thanks for confirming.
Martin Date: 02/05/20 08:40 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: TonyJ I agree that it is Colton.
Date: 02/05/20 11:14 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: callum_out Or as it became to be known, "Old Colton", neat shot, lotsa history there, wonder if that's a UP helper set.
Out Date: 02/05/20 11:24 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: GRNDMND Before seeing the other responses, my guess was Colton, CA as well, looking east as others have stated. Great image!

They don't go to Yuma. More likely a SLC to LA freight making a set out/pick up from the interchange tracks in the yard. Date: 02/05/20 17:16 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: callum_out Because in later years the UP helper sets were stationed on the Colton interchange track, was curious as to if that
was the case. Or did the helpers work out of Riverside, just wondering. Out Date: 02/05/20 19:31 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: shortlineboss UP helpers worked out to the B yard/A yard in San Berdoo off Rialto Ave. Looks like the SP depot in Colton looking East

I don't recall a UP locomotive maintenance facility in the San Berdoo-Riveside area.
Date: 02/06/20 09:46 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: PHall Being on the helpers wasn't a long term assignment. Units were drawn out of the pool.
IIRC they fueled and sanded at the ATSF engine facility in San Bernardino. Units were forwarded to East LA for inspections. Date: 02/06/20 14:03 Re: Steam Power Is Certainly Getting Squeezed Out In This Photo! Author: ns1000 Cool pic!!
