I wonder why SP had so many of those 2-8-0's with piston valves and inside valve gear.

As I've said before, slide valves do not like superheated steam.

It was normal practice that when a saturated slide valve Stephenson (inside valve gear) engine was updated with superheat to also replace the slide valves with piston valves.  The only change necessary to the valve gear is to reset the eccentric cams on the axles if the new cylinders are, as on these three engines, inside admission.

Sometimes the rebuild got the engine all new cylinders and valve chests as on the engines shown above, sometimes only the box-like slide valve chamber was replaced with a bolt-on piston valve chest.

Joe Strapac, in a Southern Pacific Historical and Technical Society meeting, once said "think of these as the GP-9s of their era", due to how many roles they filled for so many years.

The 2758 has a Worthington BL. Nice move SP! To add to that, she looks like she is coupled to a passenger consist...depot switcher perhaps?

I hope this does not come across as being too picky, but the Worthington FWH is actually a B-2.

Any guesses as to what the passenger car/consist is?

SP's small power  2-6-0's...., 2-8-0's,.... 4-6-0's  never looked right with regular square tenders.

Back in 1959 I showed up for work at Bayshore and was surprised to see the 2836 steamed up at the shops.  She was being used for stationary boiler service.  I think the 2836 and a sister also went to Salinas (DIT) about that time for stationary boiler service at a canning plant.  The SP 2-8-0's were nicely proportioned engines.

Thank you very much for these photos.

It appears 2758 has some test equipment in a box in front of the smokebox, but that passenger car it's coupled to looks to be too modern to be a dynamometer car.

2840 appears to be in a deadline. Doesn't look like the main rod is present. It's also missing it's bell, but the whistle is still there.

I agree about the tenders, Trainman41. Rectangular tenders belong on AC and GS class locos. If these consolidations don't get Vanderbuilts, it oughta' be because they have Whalebacks.

Respectfully,
