Steam & Excursion > This Steam Engineer Has An Interesting Habit While Running!

You see all kinds of ways crew members went about their jobs in the steam era.  Each of these men had their own way of handling their jobs while running the trains they were assigned to.

On the White River Lumber Co. of Enunclaw, Washington, there was one engineer whose habit it was to hang his right leg out the cab window as he operated the locomotive.  No matter what engine he was assigned to run at White River, you could always see him with his one leg hanging over the window sill.

Like I said, every crew had their own way of doing their jobs.

I knew a guy that used to wrap the horn handle in C-fold towels and a rubber band before he left the terminal on every trip. None of the other handles got wrapped in a paper towel. Just the horn.

I knew him. He had bad arthritis in his right hip socket and the only relief he got was when his right leg was elevated plus 2 generous shots of Wild Turkey per hour kept him going.

They are not setting it out.  They are doing some switching.  This bridge was at the mill in Enumclaw.  The brakeman is riding the rear footboards up to the switch that is off the bridge to the right.

What would OSHA think of that?

Yeah, he must have been prevelant all over the system.  I always though those guys were a$$ hats since they didn't bother to remove their jerry-rigged stuff from the engine at the completion of their runs, leaving their crap for the next guy..

I knew several that wrapped the horn with towels also.

The wooden handle on the horn cord would get grimier than the other handles on the control stand which were plastic, metal, or rubber coated metal. In cold or humid environments it would become downright sticky & nasty to the touch.

I've noticed that people who drive Jeep's without doors like to hang that leg out, too.

 

...except that while driving, it is the other leg.
