Steam & Excursion > This is my pic, how many of you have the same one?Date: 02/24/20 08:09 This is my pic, how many of you have the same one? Author: valmont Oct. 1, 1988 and and the crew of UP #3985 made it one memorable day. Run-bys were excellent, traversing the UP main line over Sherman Hill behind steam (and with a stint in the cab) .... hard to beat!
.... and to the question in my subject line ... Were you in the 'photo line' and got this same shot? I know for sure that Alan Miller was, as he and I drove up from CO that day for this trip. Rode the cab through Hermosa Tunnel. We set some fires that trip also. My shirt was trashed after that trip.
I did a 1987 trip behind 3985, then the June 1988 trip. There was talk in 1987 that they may shut the whole thing down, so I had not seen the engine, and went for the trip. If anyone has our Union Pacific Steam-Volume 1, you can see footage from both those trips. Quite the engine, and appreciate the crew cooperation. Author: Frisco1522 Went through Hermosa Tunnel on 3985 going east as second engine, 844 in the lead. We looked like a traveling minstrel show when we came out. Even with the cab closed up tight and all. Coming back from Sacramento.

I've been through Hermosa Tunnel, eastbound on 3985 as a coal burner, plus a number of times after conversion to oil (including 844), and it was always exciting at full throttle (naturally without a diesel). |
